Safety remains the significant factor that unifies all elements of the tugboat, towboat and barge industry, and the maritime industry generally. The joint meeting of the Coastal and Interregion Safety Committees will continue to highlight the challenges and opportunities that exist as our industry navigates our transitioning safety landscape and provide updates on the different AWO safety initiatives and programs.
Per usual, this meeting will continue to address the industry’s transition to towing vessel inspection, known as Subchapter M. Representatives from the U.S. Coast Guard will be participating in certain sessions. Furthermore, there will be an update and presentation by the AWO Permanent Subcommittee on Operational Crew Fatalities which will also specifically address the evergreen issue of falls overboard. Additionally, to identify general safety and personal safety issues affecting liquid tankerman (and their dry cargo counterparts) there will be a forum of the newly constituted ad hoc Subcommittee on Tankering/Barge Operations. Lessons learned examples will also continue to be on the agenda as they offer real-world, tangible cases worth exploring. There will even be a demonstration of a member’s program to prevent muscle strains and injuries.
The Safety Leadership Advisory Panel, which coordinates the Safety Committees’, is continuing to recruit high-caliber and influential speakers for the upcoming meeting. Suggestions may be emailed to safetycommittees@americanwaterways.com.
The Fall Safety Committees’ Meeting, Convention & Board of Directors Meeting offer AWO members the chance to discuss industry and association issues, hear from key industry leaders, and network with fellow AWO members. In particular, we encourage all member attendees to stay for the Board Meeting on Friday. As a member-led association, it is vital that every member take a responsible role in the governance of the Association. The Board Meeting is open to all members of AWO.
Please note that AWO events are open to all AWO members; you must be an employee of an AWO member company to attend. We encourage all employees of member companies to attend!
