Industry and Government Collaborate in New York and Connecticut on Major Long Island Sound Marine Industry Casualty Simulation

On September 17, McAllister Towing and Reinauer Transportation will be partnering with the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound and Sector New York in a major simulated marine accident and pollution incident on the waters of Long Island Sound. Responders will be faced with a simulated grounding and subsequent oil spill impacting the waters and shoreline of Connecticut and New York.

When maritime historian, Jerry Roberts, picked up a copy of the National Geographic from 1954 and saw pictures of a tugboat race at the New York pier, he was set on reviving the tradition that vanished in the 1960s.

Columbia System Too Important to Change

In draft recommendations released June 27, the U.S. said it wants to modernize the treaty to better reflect Northwest priorities. The feds want to add "ecosystem functions" as a third primary purpose of the treaty, alongside flood control and power generation. But as drafted, the recommendations make fish the first priority.
