Towing Industry Ton-Miles, 1997-2002

A standard measure of freight transportation is the ton-mile -- one ton of goods moved one mile. The table and chart show the ton-miles generated by the domestic towing industry with a breakout by AWO membership status. The data show an almost continuous increase of ton-miles by AWO members since 1997. In 2002, AWO members generated 316 billion ton-miles, accounting for 86% of the industry's ton-miles.

Barge Traffic by Major Commodity Group, 2004

In 2004, barges carried 817,908,000 short tons of goods. The chart displays the breakout by major commodity group, with the data rounded to the nearest tenth of a million.
